Busy Winter Week!

What a busy week we've had! Here are some of the important things we learned...

Our literacy centers this week included reading group with Mrs. Dennett, RAZkids on iPads, writing about winter and completing a text to self connection with the story Sneezy the Snowman, playing games that taught us blends and digraphs, finding words with blends at Word Work center, and finding winter pictures and pictures with beginning digraphs around the classroom and writing the sounds we hear.

Our reading lessons this week taught us to listen to, wonder about, and discuss the story A Big Mooncake for Little Star to build comprehension. We also read a poem together and identified rhyming words. We reviewed the power words we learned so far and practiced reading and writing them. You can find the power words by clicking the tab at the top of the blog! Our vocabulary words this week were: nibble, twinkle, enormous, and tiptoe.

During Writing, we began talking about nonfiction stories and writing. We talked about the difference between fiction and nonfiction. We wrote a list of facts about our classroom and wrote pages for a class book about KD. We shared our stories in our Author's Chair.

We continued working on reading, ordering, and writings numbers to 20 in Math. We put numbers in backwards order as well!

During Phonics, we worked on tapping sounds and changing out middle sounds to create new words. We added blends and digraphs and practiced reading and spelling. We listened to stories and answered comprehension questions.

In this week’s Second Steps lesson, we learned different ways we can show kindness at school. We shared ideas for kind acts we could do for one another. Ask your child to tell you about the kind acts they and their classmates have been doing for one another at school this week.

In Social Studies, we started talking about the importance of money.  We worked to answer the following questions: What is money for? What jobs do people have to earn money? WE talked about goods and services, needs and wants.

Wrapping Up Arctic Animals

What a fun, short, busy week we've had in KD! Here are some of the important things we learned...

Our literacy centers included various blends and digraphs games at ABC center, finding and writing words with blends at Write the Room center, building CVC and CCVC words and playing Roll a Power Word at Word Work center, writing about polar bears and building habitat puzzles at Theme center, reading groups with Mrs. Dennett, and reading on RAZKids at iPad center.

We continued working on composing and decomposing, writing, and reading teen numbers during Math. Please continue working on teen numbers at home with your child, as this has proven to be a very tricky skill for us!
During Writing, we lerned that a professional author tells more in their writing. We used the story When Sophie Gets Angry- Really, Really Angry as a mentor text. We wrote about wheat we do when we get really angry.  We sounded out our words and wrote the sounds we heard and practiced adding more to our stories.  We shared our stories with our class.
In Reading, we listened to and discussed part of a story to build comprehension. We wondered about part of the story ro build engagement and establish a purpose for our reading. We worked on reading independently and stretched out sounds we didn't know and used our word wall to help us with power words. Our vocabulary words we learned are assemble, contraption, participate, and startled.
We continued to practice writing uppercase letters during Phonics.  We blended and segmented sounds and read and wrote CVC and CCVC words.
We continued talking about our neighborhoods, places in our community, giving directions, our addresses, and traffic signs during Social Studies.
