Where the Wild Things Are!

We had a short but wild and busy week! Here are the important things we learned...

We explored books and activities about monsters to get ready for Halloween!  Some of our monster themed activities during centers included writing monster power words, playing CVC games, making text to self connections about a time when we felt wild, and finding CVC words around our classroom.

In Phonics, we learned the letters and sounds for Hh, Rr, and Ll. We practiced writing and reading the power words "look" (heart word) and "and". We blended and segmented sounds and worked on beginning and ending sounds.

During Writing, we listened to and discussed good writing, generated ideas and wrote about ourselves, practiced telling our stories orally, and worked on writing from left to right.  We also started using our word wall and sound wall to help us write power words.

We continued our measurement unit in Math by comparing the height and length of multiple objects. We used new vocabulary to compare including taller, shorter, and longer .

In Reading, we have been working on making text to text and text to self connections.  We are working on pointing to words as we read familiar poems and songs.  Our new vocabulary words that we learned include greet, excited, lonely, and invite

Our Second Steps lesson focused on learning how to report bullying to an adult.

Wrapping Up Community Helpers

We had a busy week wrapping up our Community Helpers unit and learning about Fire Safety! Here are some of the important things we learned...

Our literacy centers this week included independent reading, RAZKids on the iPads, and reading group with me! We wrote power words at Word Work center, wrote about fire safety at Write the Room center, wrote the power words "I see a" at Theme center, played CVC games at ABC center, and wrote power words on Magna Doodles.

During our reading lessons this week, we learned new vocabulary words that we read in our mentor texts (snatch, comfort, welcome, and furious).  We made text to self connections with the story When Sophie Gets Angry...Really, Really Angry. We practiced reading power words, learned a new poem, Just Three, and added it to our poem books.

We worked on the letters and sounds for Gg, Kk, and Oo during Phonics. We read and wrote the power word "is" and the heart word "was". We identified words and pictures that began with the /g/, /k/, and /o/ sounds and blended sounds to read words.  Please continue to work with your child at home on stretching out words, tapping out the sounds they hear on their fingers (they can show you how), and then writing what the hear.

In Writing, we used the story Round is a Tortilla to help us generate ideas for our writing. We wrote lists of various objects of different shapes. We worked on making sure our writing went from left to right and again, worked on tapping out and recording the sounds we hear in each word. Ask your child to tell you what they wrote about this week!

We compared the length of objects (and each other!) and measured using non-standard units in Math. We learned the words length, shorter, longer, and height.  We will continue working on measurement for the next few weeks. More to come!

Next week we will have our first Reed Family time! Every child at Reed is assigned to a family; a group of two kids from each grade level and one-two Reed parents (teachers and staff). We get together each month to complete fun activities and get to know others in the building.

We continued learning about plants and animals during Science and what they need to survive.

We took a pause from talking about emotions during Second Steps to learn about bullying. In the Bullying Prevention Unit lessons, we will learn:

  • How to recognize, report, and refuse bullying
  • The difference between bullying and conflict between peers
  • That they can refuse bullying in different ways
  • That bystanders can help stop bullying and that it’s the right thing to do
  • How bystanders can be part of the bullying problem
  • The similarities and differences between cyber bullying and other types of bullying
  • Ways to recognize and help stop cyber bullying
