All About Spiders!

Another short but busy week in KD! Here are some of the important things we learned...

Our centers this week included reading and writing CVC words, sequencing and reading The Itsy Bitsy Spider, playing CVC games, and writing the power words "I see".

During Phonics, we worked on our last few letters/sounds that we haven't learned yet: Qq and Uu.  We learned two new power words: you and of.  We continued stretching out sounds and segmenting words, isolating beginning and ending sounds, and reading and writing power words.  You can find the words we are working on on the tab above!

In Reading, we read the story Whistle for Willie by Exra Jack Keats and worked on retelling to deepen our understanding, making text-to-self connections, talked about patterns in rhyming stories and practiced rhyming words, and looked at illustrations and talked about their importance. We also learned new vocabulary words: proud, determined, whirl, and scramble.

During Writing, we practiced hearing and discussing a story. We practiced stretching out words and writing each sound that we hear.  We added a few more words to our word/sound wall. You can find the power words that we are learning by clicking on the tab above.

We wrapped up working on comparing numbers to 10 in Math using the vocabulary more than, less than, fewer than, and equal to.  We started our new pilot program and began to talk about teen numbers. More to come!

In this week’s Second Steps lesson, we learned two ways to help ourselves feel calm when we encounter strong feelings: asking for help and slow breathing. Ask your child to tell you some ways they’ve learned to feel calm when they get upset. Have them teach you how to use slow breathing to feel calm.

Our Social Studies lesson this week focused on oceans, countries, borders, and looking at the globe to find where we live in the United States. We will continue to learn about other countries in the coming weeks as well how families live around the world.

Looking ahead...
