Welcome to Kindergarten! : Wrapping Up Todd Parr!

We have had a very busy week wrapping up our Todd Parr unit! Here are some of the important things we learned...

Our literacy centers this week were full of fun Todd Parr activities! We completed various activities including a few writing responses at writing center. We worked on rhyming words and beginning sounds at ABC center and played Starfall ABCs at iPad center. We also practiced independent reading. In the coming weeks, each center will be differentiated to meet the needs of each individual group. More to come!

During Phonics, we learned the letters Nn, Ff, and Vv. We continued to practice beginning sounds, counting words in sentences and discriminating between words and letters, blending and segmenting sounds, and clapping syllables.

In Reading, we learned many new high frequency words: I, a, see, you, and me. We listened to and discussed the story I Went Walking and worked on choral reading, or reading together. We identified rhyming words as well. We worked on building stamina for working independently and practiced building strong work habits, which is preparing us for literacy centers in the coming weeks.

During Writing this week, listened to and discussed the story Daniel's Good Day to get ideas for our own writing. We shared story ideas with each other to prepare for writing and then drew and wrote about what makes a good day for us. We practiced adding beginning sounds to our pictures.

We wrapper up numbers to 5 in Math. Please continue helping your child write numbers as this is very tricky for us!

In this week's WeThinkers lesson, we learned how to use our eyes to gather information about the people and situations around us. We practiced noticing facial expressions, body language, and what others are looking at to help us make thoughtful guesses about what someone might be thinking, feeling, or planning to do. We learned that paying attention to others can help us understand different perspectives and make better choices during social interactions. We practiced using the information we noticed to decide how to respond, join play, solve problems, and recognize when someone may need help. The goal is to help us become more aware of others and understand that our eyes can give us important clues about what is happening around us.

We had fun in the Play Lab this week and engaging in Guided Math groups with Mrs. Silvey's class. This is something we will engage in twice a week from here on out. Pictures of Guided Math groups will be posted here on our blog and Play Lab pictures can be found in this folder each week.

We went on a beginning sound hunt in the Lab also!
