In Our Community You Will Find Helpers of Most Every Kind!

We had another busy week in KD!  Here are some of the very important things we learned...

We started our unit on Community Helpers to get us ready for Fire Safety week next week! We learned about the various important helpers in our community and what they do to help us.  Ask your child to teach you about a few of them!

We officially started literacy centers! The centers themselves will not change each week but the activity at the center will change.  The new centers are RAZkids/iPad center, theme center, sight word center, sensory bin center, write the room/writing center, and ABC center.  The children are learning how to read the work board and find their center in our classroom using the pictures on the work board.

We also started reading tasks during our Reading time to get us ready for reading groups. Also during reading this week,  we reviewed the concept of rhyme and identified rhyming words in the book Hands Can. We continued to build our repertoire or high frequency words in preparation for small group reading.  This week, we reviewed the word "can". We identified the beginning sound in spoken words and sorted pictures by beginning sound.

During Phonics, we worked on letters "d" and "s". We reviewed the vowels that we've already learned, worked on rhyming words, sentence structure, syllables, and comprehension.

We took a few extra days to review up our Math unit on numbers to 10. We started talking about number pairs, which is a great introduction to addition! Our next unit will focus on measurement.

In Writing, we learned how to use "think, pair, share" when working with our partners on the carpet. We listened to and discussed stories and made text to self connections that we could use in our writing. We talked about how writing goes from left to right on the page, worked on making sure we had beginning sounds in each word, and labeled our pictures. Your child's writing came home in folders this week! Please make sure you read each story with your child.

We continued talking about the role of a scientist during science. We looked at rocks and made observations in our Science journals.  We learned that we can use the five senses to collect data about the world.
